About us

URISE Initiative for Africa, established in October 2016 and formally registered with the Turkana County Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services in February 2017, is a dynamic refugee-led organization dedicated to empowering refugees and marginalized communities through education, entrepreneurship and peacebuilding. Our diverse team of over 20 volunteers hails from countries such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.

Our Journey and Impact

Since our inception, we have forged strong partnerships with prominent organizations to deliver impactful programs:

  • 2017-2020: Partnered with AMALA and COHERE to launch Social Entrepreneurship and Basic ICT training, graduating approximately 1500 and 500 students respectively. We also hosted a Peace Forum at Palotaka Primary School, bringing together 50 primary school students.
  • 2018: Collaborated with AMALA to launch a 10-week Online Peace Building course, graduating 17 refugees and host community students.
  • October 2018: Partnered with the LERRN Project (Local Engagement for Refugee Research Networks) under Moi University in Kenya and Carleton University in Canada.
  • 2019: Conducted a peace caravan in various areas of Kakuma Refugee Camp. Launched the “English for Change-Makers” and peacebuilding training courses with AMALA, graduating 10 and 17 students respectively.
  • 2020: Introduced both online and offline 10-week Ethical Leadership courses, graduating 25 students.
  • 2021: Partnered with OSUN and COHERE to extend educational access through the OSUN Hubs for Connected Learning Initiatives and the OSUN Research Hub in Eastern Africa and as well as collaborated with GIZ to implement digital literacy and social entrepreneurship programs.
  • 2022: Partnered with OSF through COHERE to provide advanced ICT training for students who completed the basic ICT program.
  • 2023 up to date: Continued partnership with OSUN and AMALA and as we as collaborated with the Weinstein International Foundation to deliver mediation, peacebuilding and leadership courses, equipping students with essential conflict resolution skills.
