Organization Background
URISE Initiative for Africa was established in October 2016 and formally registered by the Turkana County Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services in February 2017. URISE Initiative for Africa is a refugee-led organization with more than 20 volunteers, some of who are from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. In 2017, URISE established a partnership with Sky School and Xavier Project. As from 2017 up to date, URISE with support from Xavier Project continue to run a Social Entrepreneurship and Basic ICT training in which we succeeded to graduate approximately, 1500 and nearly 500 students respectively. In the same year 2017, we also succeeded to hold one Peace forum in Palotaka Primary School which brought 50 primary school students together. In 2018, URISE and SKY SCHOOL succeeded to launch a 10 weeks Online Peace Building course where 17 refugees and host community students graduated. In October 2018, URISE Initiative for Africa partnered with LERRN Project (Local Engagement for Refugee Research Networks) under the lead of Moi University in Kenya and Carleton University in Canada. In May 2019, we conducted a peace caravan in different areas of Kakuma Refugee Camp. In the year 2019, URISE Initiative for Africa with the support of Sky School launched an online course named English for Change-Makers and peace building training where we graduated 10 and 17 students respectively from different countries including the host community. In 2020, we also launched both the online and offline 10 weeks course in Ethical Leadership Course, in which we graduated 25 students. This year 2021, we partner with OSUN and Xavier Project to extend educational access to refugee and marginalized learners in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement through the OSUN Hubs for Connected Learning Initiatives and the OSUN Research Hub in Eastern Africa intended to provide marginalized (host) and displaced learners with access to high quality education.
